House of Peace of Vasvár

The House of Peace is the house where the Peace Treaty of Vasvár was signed in 1664. Originally, this building was the official residence of the chapter of Vasvár’s collegiate church. Katalin Makrai, the Olympic bronze medal winner gymnast, was born in this house. Nowadays the House of Peace is renovated and there we can find several exhibitions and programmes.

The Peace of Vasvár was signed on August 8, 1664 and ended the Austro-Turkish War after the defeat of the Ottoman army in the Battle of St. Gotthard on 1 August of the same year. The Peace of Vasvár opened a new relationship between the two major European empires in the seventeenth century.

Vasvár is located on the Western border of Hungary. Vasvár was an important town in the Middle Ages as the center of Vas County.

How to get it

Vasvár is easily accessible by the M7 motorway and then the number 8 highway directly from Budapest. From Vienna follow the road S31 in Austria and, after crossing the border the road number 87, in Hungary.

Vasvár is also accessible by public transport (train, bus).

House of Peace

The local tradition claims that the  ‘”House of Peace” near the city centre was the place where the so-called “Peace Treaty of Vasvár” was signed.

It is a 2-minute walk from the town centre, in Kossuth Lajos street 10.

It has a huge courtyard with parking places (cca. 10 cars but cars can also park free of charge on the street, in front of the House of Peace). The building is partly accesible for disabled people (The building is situated on the ground floor. The washroom in the building is accessible for disabled people).

The House of Peace is under national protection and it is part of the local values. The renovation of the house has been completed in 2014, since then its maintenance is continuous.

It has a long hallway, four smaller exhibition rooms and one exhibition hall, where also the peace conferences and wedding ceremonies are held. In every room are the permanent and varying exhibitions of fine arts accessible.

Thanks to purchases and additional gifts, the collection of works and fine arts of the county Vas, is constantly expanding with works of various genres, more and more graphik and plastic works.

The building has a full equipped kitchen, washroom and two small rooms which are used as a deposit for the paintings.

The copies of the peace treaty documents in four languages as latin, french, italian and arabic can be seen in the memorial room of the building.

The hall room of the building is equipped with personal computer, large screen TV, projector, projector screen, speaker.

Guided tours are avaible in hungarian, german and english languages.
