Convento de San Francisco de Alcañices
Spain
The “Convent of San Francisco” is a Franciscan monastery that the Marquis of Alcañices ordered to be built, of which its late Gothic style church with Renaissance elements still stands, inside which is the image of Our Lady of Health, patron saint of the Aliste region. A small part attached to the cloister is also preserved. This temple was rebuilt in 1907 and houses the Tourist Office, the Municipal Library and Aula Mentor. The temple has also recently been declared a Diocesan Marian Sanctuary, and the “Health” pilgrimage is celebrated there on July 2. Thousands of Spanish and Portuguese devotees meet in the town every year to prostrate themselves before the Virgin in search of her protection against illness. The Convent is part of the “Walled Enclosure of Alcañices” protected as a BIC (Property of Cultural Interest) that houses buildings of singular interest such as the old Palace of the Marquises of Alcañices (now converted into a nursing home), the parish church, as well as various examples of popular Alistana architecture. Four of the defences remain standing, of which the so-called “Clock Cube” is considered a symbol of the town. Likewise, from the Templar past there remains a fountain and the remains of a hermitage located in the “Quinta de los Templarios”, an old Templar recreation estate where a large part of a vault made of granite stone is still visible.
